Each of the constituents—stone, sand and bitumen—is environmentally friendly, both by itself and when bonded in the asphalt mix. For example, bitumen can be used to waterproof drinking-water reservoirs. Today, asphalt mixes replace tar, which has been banned since 1965 owing to its environmental incompatibility. Furthermore, asphalt is a universal material that adapts perfectly to the respective local conditions. Whether for bridges, roads or drinking-water reservoirs, cycle tracks or motorways, tropical or arctic weather, asphalt mixes are at home everywhere.
